Which Manager could Replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City?

Pep Guardiola stated earlier this year that he could take a break after his contract at Manchester City ends in 2023. If he does leave, it will be very difficult to replace the manager after great success at the club. Under Guardiola, Man City has won 3 league titles in the last 4 years as well as 4 league cups in a row and a FA cup. The club even reached the Champions League final last season, only losing it 1-0 to Chelsea. It will be quite difficult for any manager to replace Pep and replicate these results. Here are the top contenders for the Manchester City manager’s job once Guardiola leaves:

1.       Luis Enrique (Spain National Team)

When Pep Guardiola stated that he wanted to take a break, he also said he wanted to take on an international job. If he does take over the management of the Spain national team, this would leave the current Spain manager, Luis Enrique available. Both Guardiola and Luis Enrique played together for FC Barcelona under Johan Cruyff. Both coaches play a similar style of attacking Tiki-Taka football. They both like to press, play positive passes, and are comfortable playing without a fixed number nine.

2.       Brendan Rodgers (Leicester City)

Brendan Rodgers recently rejected the chance to manage Newcastle United after the takeover stating he would like to become the successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The Leicester boss, 48, has delivered very strong returns in both of his full seasons at the King Power. Rodgers has excelled at Swansea, Liverpool and Celtic, is tactically similar to Guardiola, and is the very ambitious type who would relish the high demands of the Etihad command.

3.       Erik ten Hag (Ajax)

Erik ten Hag of Ajax has previously worked with Guardiola and presents an exciting opportunity to Man City. The 50-year-old worked with Bayern Munich's reserves for nearly two years, which coincided with the Catalan's stay in Bavaria. Ten Hag saw his stock rise significantly after his heroics with the Amsterdam club in the 2018/19 Champions League campaign, during which he led Ajax to the semi-final, defeating Juventus and Real Madrid along the way.

4.       Julian Nagelsmann (FC Bayern München)

Having recently joined Bayern Munich, Julian Nagelsmann has been hailed as a great coach who has managed both TSG Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, The 33-year-old has been one of the most exciting managers in recent years and has been tipped for a big job in the near future, after having already rejected an offer from Real Madrid. The record-breaking German recently achieved another milestone as he became the youngest manager to enter the UCL semi-finals with RB Leipzig.

5.       Marcelo Bielsa (Leeds United)

The city could also appoint one of Guardiola's coaching inspirations, Marcelo Bielsa and it would actually make a lot of sense. Guardiola spent some time with the current Leeds boss in Argentina before becoming Barcelona B coach and has adopted aspects of the Argentine's footballing philosophies. Like City, Bielsa's Leeds likes to wear their opponents down with quick passing and by keeping hold of the ball, while there's rarely a shortage of entertainment on offer.
