Manchester City drubbed Norwich City 5-0 in a recent game and the credit largely rests with Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus. Until recently, Jesus was in a make-or-break situation, with his future in Manchester City in doubt. All this changed in the previous game, where he outperformed the expectations and scored twice. Many hopes have been pinned on Gabriel Jesus, who has been in and out of headlines, owing to his inability to maintain his position as a centre forward.

After the departure of Sergio Agüero from Manchester City, Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus was seen as his natural heir. Agüero’s success as the striker of Manchester City is remarkable and many expectations were set on Jesus to continue the legacy. Manchester City was looking for a striker as a replacement for Agüero, and it was initially believed that Jesus would fit right in.

However, contrary to expectations, Gabriel Jesus never really cemented his position in the team. Other players were considered, and it seemed for a while, that Jesus’ future at Manchester City was doubtful. Names like Liam Delap, the emerging star from City’s Youth Academy, and Ferran Torres were doing the rounds.

When all seemed lost, a positional change, made by Manager Pep Guardiola seemed to do the trick. Jesus was shifted from the centre forward to the right-wing. He seemed to be quite comfortable in the position and at the same time, confident and dangerous. This was a surprise to many as Jesus has always been seen as a striker ever since he arrived in Manchester City in 2017.

This might have assuaged the concerns for now, but the road ahead will be challenging for the 24-year-old. There is a lot of competition, and Manchester City will find it very difficult to nail down one for the starting spot, among the list of world-class players in their squad.  With City showing a lot of interest in Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo, things could get interesting in the days to come. However, with a newfound aim for Gabriel Jesus, a new striker wouldn’t be a challenger, but a partner on the pitch.
