What does the future hold for Donny Van de Beek at Manchester United?

Manchester United has often had successful transfers, especially when it comes to bringing in new players to the team. However, there are instances when the board and owners are not thinking along the same lines as the manager and a prime example of that is the arrival of Donny Van de Beek. The promising 24-year-old who was recently transferred from Ajax has managed to play only 520 minutes in the last 20 league games for Manchester United. He is a talented midfielder, but the problem does not lie with his qualities but whether he fits with the manager’s plan for the team or not.

Although Van de Beek played as a deep midfielder for the Dutch League, he has been unable to find a solid footing in that role for Manchester United as they are not set up to be a possession-based team. His former team, Ajax plays with a high tempo and is known for their passing and quick movement, something that is absent in Manchester United. In addition to that, he seems to be the right fit for the number ten role, which is taken by Bruno Fernandes, an irreplicable part of the team.

What furthers complicates things a bit is the arrival of Jesse Lingard who has returned to Manchester United after a highly successful loan to West Ham. The team manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, seems keen on having Lingard as a backup for the midfield position, with McTominay and Fred as the pivot, which means that Van de Beek might have to spend some more time on the bench. His agent, Guido Albers has expressed his displeasure on several occasions and insists that he would like to see Van de Beek transferred out, a possibility that cannot be ruled out given the way things are at the moment.

With the squad stacked with several options perhaps, it would make more sense for United to sell Van de Beek to recover the £35million they paid for him in September, last year. This could have been utilised to acquire the right type of defensive midfielder, who would fit into the plans Solskjær has for his team. Instead of keeping a talented yet disgruntled player at the bench, it would be preferable to provide him an opportunity to either leave on a loan or permanently and explore better pastures. As of now, the fate of Van de Beek remains undecided and only time will tell what the future holds for him.
