How did Manchester City Seal the 2020/21 Premier League Title?

 


Manchester City F.C. has been crowned the Premier League champions for the 2020/21 season. The club won the league with three games still left as 2nd place Man United lost 2-1 to Leicester City. This is Man City’s seventh top-flight title and third title in four years. It is the third time the Blues manager Pep Guardiola has won the Premier League title with the City. Manchester City collected 80 points in the standings with three games remaining.

Manchester City said in a statement, “It is Guardiola’s 10th major honour since taking charge at City in 2016, and it comes a week after we booked our place in the UEFA Champions League final at the end of the month with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Paris Saint-Germain. Our win at Palace last weekend was our 11th straight away win in the Premier League, equalling the record set by Chelsea in 2008 and City in 2017. With our Carabao Cup success already assured, City has now won 10 of the last 15 available English trophies.”

Rúben Dias

Rúben Dias is arguably the signing of the season in many people’s opinion and a serious contender for the player of the season. The Portuguese defender has completely transformed the City's backline and brought a great deal of confidence to John Stones, even keeping a defender like Ameyric Laporte out of the team.

The defender’s impact on the City team has often been compared to Virgil Van Dijk’s impact on the Liverpool team. His partnership with John Stones has been incredible, keeping clean sheets and also allowing other players to go forward Ruben Dias has been a key part of the City team as they head towards a treble, having won the Carrabao cup and playing the Champions League final later this month.


İlkay Gündoğan

The German midfielder, İlkay Gündoğan, played a major role in City’s title-winning run. In the absence of Kevin De Bruyne due to injury, the midfielder has stepped up to fill the shoes perfectly. This season, the Germany playmaker has been unleashed to devastating effect, hitting a particularly purple patch in front of goal as City swept all before them in January and February.

He scored braces in wins against both Liverpool and Spurs in February. In 26 appearances, Gündoğan has scored 12 times. His 11 non-penalty goals are three better than any other midfielder in the division. Gündoğan's contributions have been particularly valuable since City's lack of a reliable goal-scoring attacker.


João Cancelo

João Cancelo is a Portuguese defender who can play on both sides of the full-back roles. The player has fared far better this season after a mixed initial season getting used to the Catalan tactician's demands. Cancelo shows innovation and excellence in the full-back role often confusing the other opposition by stepping into midfield.

Cancelo was a key part of the City’s 21-match winning run in all competitions that spanned December to March. The defender provides the numerical superiority in midfield that Guardiola desires, while also being versatile enough to operate both inside and outside from right-back or left-back.


Phil Foden

This has been a breakout season for Phil Foden who has come through the ranks of Manchester City Academy. The Englishman hasn’t even reached the age of 21 and already has had a devastating effect on oppositions across Europe. His 12 goal involvements (seven goals, five assists) are more than any under-21 player in the Premier League.

Foden’s performance and stunning solo goal in a 4-1 win at Anfield showed his taste for the big occasion. Guardiola now counts the youngster as a practically locked-in selection for big games having faced frequent calls to give Foden more game-time.
