Is Ollie Watkins the Key Man after Grealish Departure at Aston Villa?

Aston Villa had been expected to perform extremely well after excellent recruitment in the summer transfer window. Even though the Villans sold their talisman Jack Grealish to Manchester City for £100 million, the signings of Leon Bailey, Emiliano Buendía, Danny Ings, Axel Tuanzebe, and more in summer 2021 made fans hope for a brighter future and higher league finishes. However, the start of the 2021-22 season has been quite rough for Villa as they parted ways with the manager, Dean Smith and appointed former Rangers manager and Liverpool legend, Steven Gerard. Gerrard’s name carries more weight than Smith’s, partially because of the way he took to management in his maiden role but mainly because of his playing exploits. With Danny Ings as the main striker, Ollie Watkins started playing in either a wide position or as a striker of the bench in Dean Smith’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Jack Grealish’s absence from the team has left a major hole in the attack which Gerard needs to revolutionis...

Who could be the Next Manchester United Manager?

Losing 4-1 to Watford was the final straw that resulted in the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjær. While he had been very fortunate not to lose his job after losses to both Liverpool and Manchester City at Old Trafford, the defeat at Vicarage Road broke the camel’s back. Michael Carrick will be in charge while United searches for an interim manager to manage the team until the end of the season. This is a rather strange approach for the club to be taking. It appears to indicate the likely targets will not be available until the summer. Here are five of the top names in consideration to be the next permanent Manchester United manager: Mauricio Pochettino While United might have missed out on Pochettino once before, they might be determined to avoid making the same mistake again. Pochettino has a contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2023 but it is possible the Ligue 1 giants would allow him to move on in the summer. While they are on track to win the title in 2021-22, there are stil...

Can West Ham Rise Above the Odds and Earn A Champions League Qualification?

At one time in the previous season, it seemed that all was lost for David Moyes’ West Ham, and they wouldn’t be able to qualify for the Champions League yet another time. West Ham failed to qualify for the Champions League by only two points despite the relative weakness of the top six squads and other favourable circumstances. It was said that they had missed out on a great opportunity, perhaps their best chance yet to take their team to the next level. However, things have been different this season, with West Ham building upon their strengths of the last season, and it seems that they have managed to salvage another shot at qualification. After the completion of eight rounds of the 2021/2022 Premier League, they need just one point to be in the top four. Although they won 1-0 against Everton, the coach was rather displeased at the manner of victory, believing that they didn’t play to their full potential. West Ham is considered one of the best coached teams in the Premier Leag...

Steve Bruce Parts Ways with Newcastle United

In what seemed imminent, the new owners of Newcastle United and manager Steve Bruce have decided to part ways. It was no secret that his days were numbered as fans too wanted Bruce to leave. The club's poor show in recent games exposes the clear lack of focus and effort.   As the Saudi Arabian-backed consortium takes charge of Newcastle, there seems to be a glimmer of hope for the club as rapid changes are expected to occur in quick succession. Bruce’s parting of ways was only one of the many changes the new management wishes to enforce. And not to forget, Bruce himself knew about this as he had spoken numerous times of the difficulties he had to endure while being the manager. He has often hinted at retirement and talked about the stress and personal abuse he had to go through on the job. That said, it will be difficult for the management to maintain the squad as there are no replacements lined up to take up the vacant manager’s post. Graeme Jones is acting as the interim ma...

How will the Qatar World Cup affect the Premier League?

Over the most recent international break, the Premier League has confirmed that it’s scheduling for next season which will be interrupted by the Qatar World Cup. The season will kick off on August 6, and the final round of matches played with the usual simultaneous kick-off on May 28. That means the 2022-23 season will start only one week before 2021-22 began, with the season coming to an end just a week later than the current campaign will end next year. It has become increasingly obvious the World Cup is set to have a massive impact on the Premier League and other top domestic leagues around the world. As things stand, Premier League players will be in action for their clubs for a few weeks before they will be expected to be in Qatar representing their countries. The last set of Premier League matches to be played before the World Cup will be played on November 12 and 13 for match week 16. The Premier League confirmed there will be a six-week break from November and December for ...

What is Going Wrong with Leeds United this season?

Leeds United returned to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years in the 2020-21 season. The Peacocks enjoyed a superb campaign under Marcelo Bielsa, finishing 9th in the table last season. However, this Premier League season has turned out bitter for them. With almost a quarter of the season played, there is no surprise to see Chelsea at the top and Norwich City at the bottom. But what many may have not expected is Leeds United sitting only a single place above the drop zone. Not only did they start poorly in this Premier League season, but they were also not as active in the transfer market as they perhaps should have been, while other clubs were eagerly buying players to overcome their weaknesses in the transfer window. Let’s take a look at what’s going wrong with Leeds United this season:   1.        Second season syndrome The second season is often harder for the promoted teams in the Premier League. Leeds United was a breath o...

The Newcastle United Takeover by Saudi-led Consortium

The Newcastle United has finally been taken over by a Saudi-led consortium, bringing an end to the 14-year controversial ownership of Mike Ashley. Recently, a deal worth $408 million (£300 million) was concluded in which around 80% stakes of the English club are under the control of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). The involvement of PIF means Magpies will serve no more than a sports washing project for the Saudi Arabian regime. This news was confirmed by Premier League in a statement, “The Premier League, Newcastle United Football Club and St James Holdings Limited have today settled the dispute over the takeover of the club by the consortium of PIF, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media.” “Following the completion of the Premier League’s Owners and Directors Test, the club has been sold to the consortium with immediate effect. The legal disputes concerned which entities would own and/or have the ability to control the club following the takeover.” “...

Which Manager could Replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City?

Pep Guardiola stated earlier this year that he could take a break after his contract at Manchester City ends in 2023. If he does leave, it will be very difficult to replace the manager after great success at the club. Under Guardiola, Man City has won 3 league titles in the last 4 years as well as 4 league cups in a row and a FA cup. The club even reached the Champions League final last season, only losing it 1-0 to Chelsea. It will be quite difficult for any manager to replace Pep and replicate these results. Here are the top contenders for the Manchester City manager’s job once Guardiola leaves: 1.        Luis Enrique (Spain National Team) When Pep Guardiola stated that he wanted to take a break, he also said he wanted to take on an international job. If he does take over the management of the Spain national team, this would leave the current Spain manager, Luis Enrique available. Both Guardiola and Luis Enrique played together for FC Barcelona under ...
